Dear PR People, I Love You

Loving Ralph Jones’ work here. Like me, Jones receives a significant number of pitches from PR people. Unlike me, he decided to spend a month replying to them all with various forms of “I love you“: For an entire month, I decided, I would reply to every single one of my PR emails with the phrase “I love you.” In 95% of cases I used this declaration as a sign-off, but occasionally a PR would be lucky enough to receive the three words in the body of an email. Here’s how it went down. Genius. I wish I had thought of

An X-Wing. Made of Lego. Full Size.

Less formally, the X-Wing symbolizes an obscenely profitable partnership, now in its 14th year, that has sold more than 200 million building sets, 30 million copies of four video games (according to NPD Group), and 450 different Lego Star Wars mini-figures. Lego Star Wars has been a major contributor to a five-year run during which Lego has averaged 24 percent year-on-year growth in sales and 40 percent growth in profits. Now that’s how to use PR and marketing to get a corporate story out there on the history of Lego. I just wonder who’s going to have promotional sets at Eurovision next year?

The marketeering that is ruling Reddit

Ryan Holiday at BetaBeat, on Reddit and marketing… Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s what’s happening here. These aren’t organic accidents or real fan-to-brand interaction. It’s just fakery–there’s too much of it for that not to be the case. And what’s worse, the brands that are engaging in the stunts could easily afford to pay for the ad space on those same pages. In other words, we’re not talking about small creative marketing here–we’re talking multibillion-dollar corporations using their enormous marketing teams to overwhelm busy volunteer moderators.

“Microsoft sells out of Surface Pro, just like the Zune HD did in 2009”

Cracking headline from Apple Insider, but it hides two greater truths. Every modern connected device has ‘sold out’ at launch, so much so that the press release is to be expected, and I’m sure someone in logistics is tasked with making sure the ‘zero stock’ tick box is filled. The second is that if the Surface Pro is anything like the Zune HD in terms of quality, durability, and ease of use, then the Surface Pro is going to be a winner (at least for individual users). I still reach for my Zune HD for my portable music when traveling.
