The third generation of N-Gage is arguably Xbox Live

For all the taco puns and industry questions, there was a lot to like about Nokia’s N-Gage system, especially in the second "next generation gaming" iteration. It was just a little bit too early to market and never managed to get a foothold in the consciousness of the games in the world. Something like X-Box Live shows just how much of the basic structure Nokia got right – look at the Windows Team Blog talking about the new version of Xbox Live in Windows Phone 7.5 and you’ll see what I mean. With Nokia set to bring multiple million users

Nokia failed the N-Gage vision, but is it a portent for Ovi?

The announcement from Finland that the N-Gage service will be canned at the end of September 2010, with no more effort placed into the ecosystem by Nokia, gave some tech blogs an open goal for some humour, but also points out a big problem that Nokia have. N-Gage, both in it’s hardware iteration and it’s Software and Services iteration have been great ideas. It’s fair to say that the original mobile gaming vision in 2003 was a good four or five years ahead of the pack, with online gaming, connected community and software downloaded over the internet (although perhaps that

I’ve Got Catan on a Mobile Again!

A very quick post as I travel back from London to point out the release of Settlers of Catan for the iPhone has been released. Your reaction is either ‘huh’ or ‘time to download!’ Mine was the latter. I was a big fan of this title when it arrived on the original N-Gage, so to have a mobile version again makes my heart skip along. Of course it’s on a different platform, so what happened Nokia? DId someone roll a seven and put the robber on your games catalogue? One for an AAS editorial in the near future I think.

Security and Selling of Smartphone Applications

Two posts over on All About Symbian to start the week off, both with an eye on the smartphone application market. The first is about the mixed messages that Nokia are putting on as regards application stores. the Sims 3 mobile game from EA is now available in the Ovi Store (for £4) and the N-Gage Store (for £6). Something is seriously out of whack here. The release of Sims 3 on N-Gage is going to be very interesting for Nokia and Electronic Arts. Why? Because this java-based title is already out there in various formats and locations – which

You can’t win a million with Million Dollar Poker

Nokia’s latest N-Gage release is Million Dollar Poker, and I’ve had a look at it over on All About Symbian; more specifically on Ovi Gaming. Nokia are shouting about this title, an the main selling point in this poker game (which is the third poker game to feature on the new N-Gage platform) is their support for online multi-player. Yes, Million Dollar Poker is here, and with a good handle on the terminology of poker, I think I can safely say that the closest poker term to describe Million Dollar Poker is… a bit of a flop. This is the

Why The Current N-Gage Games Are Crap.

Simpla answer, because it’s going to take the programmers and developers a lot longer to get up to speed with the system. All the signs are that this summer’s Reset Generation (preview here) will be the first ‘true’ N-Gage game for the new gaming platform of S60 v3. Anyway, more indepth stuff on today’s editorial at All About Symbian. In short order Krisse and I looked (electronically) at him and said that it’s way too early to make that sort of comparison. After all, the games Steve is probably remembering from the N-Gage classic are titles like Pathway to Glory
