Microsoft Erases The Last Bit Of Zune Branding

News via Paul Thurrott that Microsoft’s last grandfathered piece of Zune Content – the Zune Music Pass – is about to be archived. Users of the subscription music service that also offered ten free DRM-free downloads a month will be switched to the Groove music service (neé Xbox Music Pass) in October. And yes, the ten free downloads are not carrying over: As of November 15, 2015, Zune services will be retired, You will no longer be able to stream or download content to your device from the Zune music service. However, Zune devices will still function as music players

In all the talk of the Facebook phone, a few sites have suggested that a Zuckerberg phone would be as much a folly as the Zune project from Microsoft. Microsoft will be porting their Zune HD apps over to Windows Phone

This is excellent news, and not just for us Zune HD owners like me that love Musicquiz and Audiosurf Tilt. Number one, we actually have some developers that have developed titles for Zune that aren’t Microsoft employees or aren’t on the Zune team. And those guys are very welcome to go and create apps for Windows Phone any time they like. The apps that we have built internally for Zune, we’re actually looking at porting those over to Windows Phone. Right now, our focus for the app team is, more apps for Zune. It’s always a surprise when one thing is held up as a brand new innovation on the web, when a similar implementation is already public – but doesn’t have a nice piece of fruit to help it along. Microsoft have already surprised me with the Zune HD as a portable media player, and the integration with Zune.net continues that path.
