The Nokia AT&T Symbian Pager (or the Surge)

Announced today in the US by Nokia and AT&T is the Surge, an S60 phone that seems to owe more to the US fascination with pagers than a true smartphone (details on All About Symbian). beyond that, and the inevitable comments that it’s hit every branch of the ugly tree, I find myself strangely drawn to it. No I have no idea either. There’s no wi-fi on the phone, the number pad is part of that weird tiny keyboard, the headphone jack is only 2.5mm, it’s a 2megapixel tiny camera… Still looks cute though. Can I review one?

Top Tips on Twitter for Smartphone Users

Just finished up an article for All About Symbian for mobile phone users looking to get involved with Twitter on their handsets. In a “Top Lists” format and the headings were: Why should I use Twitter… isn’t it silly? Speak the language Who should I follow [er, me!] Using SMS to post to Twitter Using SMS to receive Twitter updates Read Twitter on the web Alternative websites for reading Twitter Uploading pictures to Twitter Twitter apps for your Smartphone For all the detail, you’ll need to read the article at All About Symbian.

Stephen Fry, Vax and the All About Symbian Insight Podcast

Popping up every week (although I don’t always point it out here) is the All About Symbian podcast, where Rafe Blandford, Steve Litchfield and I chat about the latest happenings in the smartphone world – mostly Symbian but we talk about the wider reach as well. Of course you can’t talk about modern phones without discussing VAX systems from the late 80s and the occasional Prog-Rock number (Aqualung by Jethro Tull this week). We’re more than just a dry news show. I managed to sneak in some Shakespeare last week! And if all that doesn’t float your boat, you can

Nokia’s Comes with Music if you like mainstream, don’t mind DRM, can live with restrictions….

Nice big article over on All About Symbian looking at Nokia’s Comes with Music service, where you receive two years of as much Digital Restricted Music as you can download from the Nokia Music Store. Admittedly you need to have a taste for mainstream music, and there are some gotchas, as I found it: Let’s start with Eurovision ("must we?" – every AAS reader). It’s the biggest live TV show on the planet (112 million viewers this year), it releases a worldwide compilation album of all the songs, and after my previous article, I knew it was in the store.

A Little Bit of GTD Tech For The Weekend?

Over on All About Symbian, I’ve posted an article that talks about how I use GTD with the modern S60 smartphone. This was a question I was asked thanks to the 5800 video diary series that is now addressed in a full article. The short answer is, I don’t. The S60 derived phones have an absolutely hopeless To-Do/List system in the calendaring application, and the regular calendar/agenda functions are poor at best. As readers here (and party go-ers in SXSW) will know, I’m a big Filofax fan. It’s disappointing when paper and pencil outgun silicon, and it’s made even more

My Cynical Hat Comes Out To Look Back At Mobile World Congress

Over on All About Symbian, I’ve posted my little Network moment while looking back at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona: I want to let you into a big secret about the recent Mobile World Congress and your smartphone. Nothing has changed since Monday. Nobody waved a big magic wand and suddenly the world is a happier place and all your problems (even just those around smartphones and mobile communications) have been solved. You could easily argue that MWC hasn’t even amounted to a hill of beans. After all, the phones on display are pretty much out of reach
