The Martian Go-Pro

Part of the footage in ‘The Martian’ film (which I’ve still to see, I know) is actually from the Go-Pro cameras dotted around the set, just like the International Space Station has a few of the cameras as well. Scott ended up using footage from the GoPros—they were all actually recording when Damon was speaking into them—in the final cut of the film. The GoPros, which us Earthlings tend to use to record extreme sports, or other exciting life events, become like security cameras—capturing the monotony of Watney’s Martian life from fly-0n-the-wall angles, as well as confidants. Just one more

The world of PR is already messing up Jelly

Mobile start-up Jelly (a sort of post an image and ask a question about it and hope someone in your social circle (a) knows the answer (b) is on Jelly and (c) will happily post the answer) is just over a week old. Showing just how fast the internet works, the social media teams from the big brands are already “leveraging their real-time social virility and trading friendship capital for marketing messages.” Over to David Meyer: The thing launched like three seconds ago and already I’m getting notifications for “questions” from mobile phone companies, soft drink firms and so on.

“Microsoft sells out of Surface Pro, just like the Zune HD did in 2009”

Cracking headline from Apple Insider, but it hides two greater truths. Every modern connected device has ‘sold out’ at launch, so much so that the press release is to be expected, and I’m sure someone in logistics is tasked with making sure the ‘zero stock’ tick box is filled. The second is that if the Surface Pro is anything like the Zune HD in terms of quality, durability, and ease of use, then the Surface Pro is going to be a winner (at least for individual users). I still reach for my Zune HD for my portable music when traveling.

Silence of the Eurovision Song Contest Lambs

This year’s ‘theme’ for the Eurovision Song Contest has been announced. The key phrase is “We Are One” and the marketing image is… well, it’s a butterfly that looks like it’s been attacked by a Dulux factory. Eurovision Song Contest is a shared project that unites millions of people in the east, west, north and south. Beyond all the glitter, there is a thought. A big idea that is 100% relevant for Public Service. It’s about togetherness, diversity and happiness. Eurovision Song Contest might appear as a trivial matter. But a trivial matter that engages over one hundred million people

Social media marketing, through the medium of Asylum of the Daleks

This morning in Edinburgh? Just a solitary Scotsman standing in front of the excited audience asking us very politely “to keep it a surprise for everyone else.” When that Scotsman is Steven Moffat, addressing a lucky audience of Doctor Who fans getting ready to watch the season premier a week before its airing next week, trust is enough. My thoughts on marketing after attending the ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ screening this morning are up on Forbes.

Twitter Shot J.R. – How The Buzz Is Turning Towards Making Money

TechCrunch is reporting that Twitter is close to securing another funding round which should value Ev’s company at a quarter of a billion dollars. No matter the economic climate, or any lingering web bubble, investors do not put down the cash unless they see some concrete plans. Now those plans could be a cold hard plan on how to make money from Twitter, or it could be something slightly less concrete in the near future but coupled with the volume of users (and intra-user connections). Whatever The Big Book of Making Money in 140 Characters or Less says, someone has
