I know that some people prefer the cad Hugh Grant over the very respectable Colin Firth in ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’, but this isn’t a film. This is consumer electronics. When Microsoft advertise the new Surface Pro tablet with 64GB of storage, you don’t expect to have a massive 23GB to store your own files.
It’s all very nice everyone getting excited about Fluid, little OS X utility that turns a web app (Facebook, Gmail, Last.FM, Boo.com, and so on) into launchable icons on your desktop… …but didn’t everyone else do this ages ago with the Prism plug-in for Firefox, now marketed as WebRunner? Most of my Asus Netbook’s functionality came from these web-apps-as apps. What’s changed now? Oh yes, the Apple fans can claim it as their own.
And so the CrunchPad is placed by it’s spiritual father, Michael Arrington, into the Dead Pool. I doubt it’s the last we’ll see of the device, but it’s certainly the last we’ll see of it with the CrunchPad moniker. So the dust settles on the details on Chrome OS and everyone can spend the next few months debating Google’s strategy. Unlike other Bay Area companies, Google has been known to get it wrong, so just because they are doing something, it doesn’t meant that they will make a success of it. With Chrome OS they’re making the biggest play to cloud computing yet. By cloud computing they actually mean “we’ll be your hard drive that you can connect to wherever you are in the world.” Yes Google have brought us full circle back to the days of mainframes Dec52’s
Before flying over to Las Vegas for Blogworld, I was looking at my carry-on bag and trying to decide if bringing my full laptop was a good idea. Would I really use it while I was travelling? While I was at the conference? In the downtime in the evenings and mornings? In the end I did take it, partly as a massive file storage for TV episodes and films to watch (via the PSP) and so I’d have a full editing suite if I decided to do any recording. If there is one thing that marks me out as very old school it’s the stylus that I carry when out and about. For all the resistive touch screens (ie almost everything but the iPhone) on a multitude of devices i tend to use the built in stylus for about five minutes before reaching into my drawer of spare parts for one of the many pointers I have for the Psion 5mx (and similar machines).
