Cameron asks, over at The Podcast Network, why iTunes aren’t listing the TPN music shows, including my music show, TPN Rock? It’s a simple question I have no answer for. The Edinburgh Fringe Podcast started on August 1st, was in ITMS world-wide in about 24 hours, and even hit the Top 100 (it peaked at #23) last weekend. Other TPN Shows are there, just not the music ones. It’s time to put on the Black Hat. Firstly, is it just the TPN Music shows? Nope. Now here’s a monumental, earth shattering surprise: One reason for the delay could be the missing third leg of the necessary triangle, the carrier. Verizon, Sprint and other Motorola partners are planning their own digital music services, which would allow subscribers to download music directly to their phones over new broadband wireless networks. Okay, not exactly one of my better ideas, but in the end nobody got hurt, and the iPod Shuffle with the PGP Private Key got back to it’s rightful owner. What am I talking about? My Physical Media Hacking experiment at OpenTech 2005. I’m still convinced the theory behind this is pretty sound (especially when you see the number of Apple fans defending the concept of the iPod Shuffleand the idea that listening to random music is the way forward). For all that they’re small and svelte and functional, the iPod Shuffle is, in my opinion, a really crap mp3 player in it’s 1 gb incarnation, let alone any 2 gb and 4gb versions that may come along this Autumn. I can just about live with the idea of auto-filling your MP3 player with a random collection of tunes from your collection.
