If I spend £10 on music, what does the artist get?
let’s spin the numbers round in this TechDirt post on how much an artist can earn selling music in various places. If I spend £10 buying music for an artist, how much will they actually get in their pocket?
Amazon or iTunes: £7.00 (note there is a £30/year fee to have the album listed).
Bandcamp: £8.50 (less CD production cost and shipping, which Uniform Motion reckons will leave them £4.34).
Spotify: 2.5p
(Spotify can be listened to free, which makes this bit fun, but let’s go with the tenner a month for mobile. So a ten track album, listened to once, earns an artist 0.029 Euros).
Read that again. The old fashioned buy the music from the band via Bandcamp and they get £8.50 gross to make and ship a CD to you, or go all Web 2.0 and reward them with two and a half pence. A brave new world indeed. Can you guess who owns part of Spotify? Think hard now…
Surely this is the amount goig to the Label? Artist can potentially get a lot less than this unless they’re self-publishing?
Direct numbers from a band, in this case Uniform Motion .They’re indie, and reflecting what they get. i;m sure if you put a label in between them and Amazon.Itunes or example there;s going to be some percentage that goes to the label.
