Back in my day, an “A” meant something special

I’m sure with a bit of digging we’ll have the “exams are easier today” editorials, maybe even one that has a headteacher expressing delight in an entire class getting an A* in English, and other fluffy happy stories. But that helps nobody. Make the grade mean something, Make the “A” reflect the top ten percent of students sitting the exam, make the “B” the next 15%, and right down the line. Does that change the difficulty level of the paper? Perhaps not, but it will be clear which students are the more proficient than others.
