Press Release: Leading Scottish podcaster turns his microphone towards Eurovision
Wednesday May 12, Edinburgh – British Academy (Bafta) nominated podcaster Ewan Spence is set not only to return to the Eurovision Song Contest this May, but also to bring the showmanship, delights, performances and emotional highs and lows to the ears of the world with the launch of “The Unofficial Eurovision Song Contest Podcast.”
No stranger to the podcasting world, Spence was Scotland’s first podcaster. His Unsigned Rock Music show (TPN Rock, www.tpnrock.com) has been running for over five years, and the annual daily coverage of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe has become required listening for fans around the world. Now he turns his eye to one of the world’s biggest television shows, the Eurovision Song Contest.
“The show might be just one night a year,” he explains “but the contest itself is a year round event building up to that one night in May. And when I looked around for a Eurovision podcast,I couldn’t find one. That was something I had to sort.”
Having built up a reputation in covering events such as the Edinburgh Fringe and the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, Spence attacked the challenge with a microphone and his enthusiastic outlook on life. The podcast opened in late April with an introduction to Eurovision, bringing those new to the contest up to speed with issues such as political voting. Currently it is previewing every song in a “Juke Box Jury” format with a number of guest panellists, including Scottish comedian Bruce Devlin.
Next week, volcanic ash willing, Spence will board a flight to Oslo and the Telenor Stadium, where this year’s contest will be held. Just as in previous years, he’ll be reporting from backstage, but now with a microphone, bringing up to the minute news, interviews and Q&A Guides to the contest in the run up to the live shows. Following their popular debut in 2009, Spence will also give listeners to the podcast his very own alternative commentary for the live Eurovision shows on May 25th, May 27th and May 29th.
