My Dad, the Browncoat
Christmas 2006 saw everyone pitch in for a Playstation Portable for my Dad, and since then he’s been working through Tomb Raider (and finsihed it at the end of Feb). One of the other things that I showed him was how to get DVD’s onto the PSP (which resulted in him ripping “Snakes on a Plane” to watch the plane to Cyprus in Feb). He’s always been one for Science Fiction, John Wayne and the “rootin’ tootin’ shootin’ ” episodes of Star Trek, so it was only natural that I introduced him to Firefly, pre-formatted for the PSP.
So he’s over visiting just before I flew out to Austin. “Have you got more Firefly?” “Nope.” “Why?” “They cancelled it. You’ve got all they ever put out on TV” [well, he has the 13 episodes, but let’s not split hairs]. “That was stupid – it’s really good!” So explained the evil network, the plucky crew of Joss Weddon, and slipped him Serenity on UMD. “This is the last – one final motion picture hurrah,” which he took with a mix of saddness and enjoyment.
I put an arm around his shoulder. “Dad… welcome to the Browncoats.”
