The clause \u2013 a late insertion into the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1988\/9\">Local Government Bill<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 prohibited local authorities from \u2018promoting\u2019 homosexuality and prevented maintained schools from teaching on the \u2018acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The clause was introduced on the back of right wing concerns that by funding support groups and services for lesbian, gay and bisexual people local authorities were somehow \u2018promoting\u2019 being LGB to influential young people.
