Seems to be the season for shouting about mythical milestones. Relax though, because you don\u2019t need to care about it.<\/p>\n<p>In case you missed the news, someone on Twitter reached a total of one million people following them. How relevant Is the question \u201chow many is he following back?\u201d For Ashton Kutcher (Mr Million) is his Twitter use a social network or a broadcast channel? Does it matter?<\/p>\n<p>Looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/ewanspence\">my Twitter account<\/a> I follow around 500 people \u2013 generally I\u2019ll add people that respond to me, have been @\u2019ed by my friends, or who\u2019s websites look fun. I don\u2019t automatically follow back if you follow me. I currently have 2500 people following my twitter stream. Part of Twitter (and any social network) is gathering followers\u2026 but when you have one million on one side, and eighty on the other, I think one reason for being on Twitter is clear \u2013 to bypass the regular media and broadcast yourself.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing wrong with using Twitter as a broadcast option \u2013 witness both the use that ex-F1 announcer James Allen (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/jamesallenonf1\">@jamesallenonf1<\/a>) is making of the service during qualifying and the Grand Prix and my upcoming commentary during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurovision.tv\/\">Eurovision<\/a> Semi Finals and Grand Final in May \u2013 but like any good tool it has different use case scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t kid yourself that <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/aplusk\">Ashton<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/oprah\">Oprah<\/a> are doing the same thing with Twitter that you are. But don\u2019t kid yourself that it matters either.
