There are articles where you can tell that a writer has started from a neutral position and investigated something new. Pemberton is not one of those.<\/p>\n<p>His \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/women.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/life_and_style\/women\/the_way_we_live\/article5747308.ece\" target=\"_blank\">A Load of Twitter<\/a>\u201d starts poorly, with a strap-line that says \u201cFeel the need to tell everyone everything you&#8217;re doing all of the time? Then tweeting is for you\u201d and goes downhill from there. Let me lift out some quotes, because I\u2019m not sure where to start\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>And just who are the \u201cfollowers\u201d willing to tune into this rolling news service of the ego?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwittering stems from a lack of identity. It\u2019s a constant update of who you are, what you are, where you are. <strong>Nobody would Twitter if they had a strong sense of identity<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Using Twitter suggests a level of insecurity<\/strong> whereby, unless people recognise you, you cease to exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would guess that the typical profile of a \u2018follower\u2019 is someone who is young and who feels marginalised, empty and pointless. <strong>They don\u2019t have an inner life<\/strong>,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And my personal favourite\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe primary fantasy for most people is that <strong>[on Twitter] we can be as connected as we were in the womb<\/strong>, a situation of total closeness,\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh dear.
