Paper Notebook Beats CNN To News Exclusive

Enthusiasts and technologists were amazed to discover yesterday that a new invention has beaten established organisations to breaking news. While many journalists and reporters are carrying this new device, because it can be integrated into larger collections they personally carry (so called files of facts), only a few of them have realised that this is the future – they and their close friends can see news written down long before it reaches broadcast or print. It is called the notebook, and is a cross platform solution, which can run in almost any location and configuration. It is expected that manufacturers

The Sunday Times is Pre-Revenue, Let’s Twitter That

I think Kevin Marks nails the reply to The Sunday Times Twitter article rather nicely: Launched in 1821, The Sunday Times is the inescapable, old tech product. It boasts 1.2m readers — teeny compared to the BBC World Services’s 183m — but its audience has slumped in the past year. Right now, the Australia-based company that owns The Sunday Times is valued at $29billion, even though, in start-up argot, it is “pre-revenue”. Despite the big losses and the ennui swirling around his product, Murdoch (who also coined the term “Digger”) has admitted many are bewildered when they first encounter The

Twitter Is Like The Womb, says The Sunday Times

Andy Pemberton of The Sunday Times has posted a… courageous article about Twitter. There are articles where you can tell that a writer has started from a neutral position and investigated something new. Pemberton is not one of those. His “A Load of Twitter” starts poorly, with a strap-line that says “Feel the need to tell everyone everything you’re doing all of the time? Then tweeting is for you” and goes downhill from there. Let me lift out some quotes, because I’m not sure where to start… And just who are the “followers” willing to tune into this rolling news

Why I Love Twe2, and Why I’m Avoiding It

I really want Twe2 to work. Ever since Twitter turned off SMS delivery for UK users of the microblogging service, the value of Twitter while out and about, especially while at a conference, has been lessened. Sure there have bee improvements in other areas, but a push service for DM’s or @replies is still sorely needed. It was one of the features that made Twitter the breakout success at SXSW 2007 in my opinion, and the loss of it last year did impact on my plans. Would I pay Twitter to get back DM and @ replies? Yes. But they

Another Twitter Visualisation To Join The Flock

Yes, today’s weird way to look at your social graph on a service is Twittersheep. Put together by @myoung @tedroden and @nickbilton, Twittersheep will look at the bio text of the people who follow you to build up a taxonomy of your cloud. It looks nice – not quite sure the value in it beyond “look, we can work with the API,” but have a look at my cloud, and maybe link to yours in the comments?

Repeat After Me, Twitter is Mainstream

Perhaps I was hoping James Whatley was making a Galactica reference with his “so say we all,” but no. He was pointing at 140Characters simple blog post asking for the arguments and questions to stop. Twitter is now mainstream. I’ll throw in two points which helped me make my mind up. The first is that when I’m writing up articles for the mainstream press (print or online) I no longer have to explain what Twitter is, and the sub-editors don’t feel the need to add it in. The second is that the tipping point is now clear. “Stephen Fry’s I’m
