Just look at Pluto. We built a camera, we threw it into space, and this is what it sent back. Atmosphere, lakes of ‘stuff’, ice mountains, valleys… Zoom in and think what a wonderful world we live in to be able to find another wonderful world.
The robot camera called the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter takes a picture of the robot tank called Curiosity as it trundles around Mars. We made those!
Stratenschulte is a photographer with the German news agency DPA. He has been photographing euro coins from various angles for the past three years. He tries to convey the complex crisis in images. The problem is that the crisis won’t end, which means Stratenschulte has to keep coming up with fresh ideas. His colleagues have resorted to using children’s toys, arranging a plastic shark to look like it’s eating a Lego man holding a Greek flag. They have photographed coins in a free fall. Having been up Calton Hill today, with the sun in the sky, and the time just right, I thought I could see what would be a fantastic picture of Nelson’s Monument and the mast on which sits the Edinburgh Time Ball.
Last year I was contacted by Joi Ito, asking for permission to use one of his pictures of myself in a photo gallery book he was putting together. The book was Freesouls and the aim was: …to put together a photography book which is about all of the inspirational moments and inspirational people from the last year. I have been lucky to be able to capture many of those moments in my photography and I am hoping that a book will be a good way to provide context for and share those moments with a wider audience of people.
