Jolla open sources the Sailfish OS browser

I continue to be impressed by the commitment that Jolla is making to the Sailfish OS platform and hardware. That continues this week with the open sourcing of their web browser application: By now it’s a widely known fact that the browser is based on the Gecko engine which is developed by Mozilla corp. and is used in their Firefox browser and Firefox OS. For some reason it’s not that known that the Sailfish browser is built upon the EmbedLite embedding API (also known as IPCLiteAPI) for Gecko. I get the feeling that Samsung aren’t considering an open source path for Bada to try to get other manufacturers to use it, but more as a great big red flag to the rest of the industry that they are a serious company and not some OEM ready to licence whatever the flavour of the month is.

So you have a competent smartphone operating system, an engineering team that, with the right inducement, could stay with the OS, and a rather fluid market looking for options. Open Source Should Be Used By Government, Say The Tories

While I’ve not delved too deeply into this one – and I doubt I could delve as much as Microsoft’s lawyers will, the proposal (from the Tory party) on IT projects run by the government makes some sensible sounding recommendations. The first is the headline one, with the report saying that projects should make more use of Open Source projects. Rather than buying complicated CMS systems for websites and projects, there should be consideration to just use an installation of WordPress; Open Office is a viable alternative; that sort of stuff.
