Three national selection shows, three countries, in just three nights. Edinburgh to London, to Hannover, to Vienna, to Budapest, and then home. If it was Football, nobody would give it a second thought. But it’s the Eurovision Song Contest, so obviously it’s a mad and stupid thing to do. Which it’s not. Honestly.
The BBC’s track record in song selection and national finals has not been stellar in the last decade. Rather than rely momentum and dusting down last year’s plan, something radical needs to be done to guarantee the UK doesn’t embarrass themselves around Europe.
The national finals to find the singer for the United Kingdom’s entry into the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest airs tonight, and this is my liveblog of the show. Sometimes life imitates art to such a degree that you wonder what’s going on, but this is too good to miss. Andorran Broadcaster RTVA (like the BBC here in Blighty) is currently getting ready to broadcast their national final to select a song to represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest. Unfortunately the song Estrelles D’Or by Marc Durandeau bears a haunting similarity to the song that he performed in the Spanish National Final for the 2008 contest. Which came second.
