From The Other Ewan. I wonder if the app asked the user for ‘control’ over their SMS messages during install and then sent the premium SMS requests itself? It wouldn’t surprise me. This is a lot worse than the standard scams that rely on a poorly worded advert in some newspaper to sort-of trick unwitting consumers. Somebody actually *programmed* an app to deliberately hose people. This is why companies like Apple and Nokia want to have the approval process on the applications in their smartphone eco-systems (and it’ll make good copy for the anti-virus developers as well).

Samsung has also been the top smartphone label in the UK for the past 17 weeks, although only a few of those could have been affected by the Galaxy S II. How many people are buying Galaxy handsets because they are Samsung and how many are buying the Galaxy handsets because they are Google/Android? Because the answer to that reveals the true winner in these numbers.

Absolutely nothing wrong with James Kendrick’s list of top 5 Android apps (after all, it’s great SEO as well as a great topic, congrats James), but it’s interesting to me that the genres of those top apps are replacement app launcher, replacement web browser, replacement MP3 player, replacement widget launcher and optional widgets. Nice to see that the Android OS is so perfect that the recommendations are to change everything as soon as possible!
