SXSW Baby! is a blog that’s been running since the dawn of time (thirteen years and counting) and has passed through the hands of a number of Webmasters (all called the Dread Pirate Roberts). For most people, Eurovision is something that happens one Saturday night in May. For others, there’s a build up to three shows, with the two midweek semi-finals. But for other people (like myself) it’s a year-long competition, with national heats, semi-finals, and lots of ‘Song for Europe’ style National Finals across the continent. Sometimes these Finals have rather middle of the road inoffensive numbers that are nice, but no more. Sometimes you find a gem or two that simply fails to win, and is lost in time. Three national selection shows, three countries, in just three nights. Edinburgh to London, to Hannover, to Vienna, to Budapest, and then home. If it was Football, nobody would give it a second thought. But it’s the Eurovision Song Contest, so obviously it’s a mad and stupid thing to do. Which it’s not. Honestly.
