The First Sign Of Summer

Visiting Edinburgh for a long weekend, and I’m out in the back garden when I hear the noise of an aircraft. It sounded very old, with a rather throaty sound. Looking up, I saw one of the most gorgeous aircraft in the world. A Mk V Spitfire. Now I’ve seen these at Airshows, both flying and static, but being underneath a single one, flying at about 200 feet was amazing, and the image of it is till fresh in mind. What a wonderful start to a lovely weekend!

Literature in the 21st Century

One of the ‘must have’ applications on my 7650 (and 9210, and 5mx, and Palm, and so on through to the dawn of history) has been an EBook Reader. Ebooks are generally compressed text files that allow you to store an entire novel in around 500K (for the average novel). Given that an episode of The Simpsons is going to take 20mb for a chopppy 15 frames/sec version, that’s a lot of entertainment in a small space. EBooks have allowed me to read some of the classics of literature, from HG Wells “The Time Machine,” to Edgar Rice Burroughs “Mars”

Where’s The Mobile Internet?

So my smartphone is the internet in my pocket? I’m not so sure. Although I can finally pick up my email, and browse through a slowly increasing number of WAP sites (both of which are incredibly useful), it’s still a long way from the internet. “Hold on you can put Opera on your phone, what are you wittering about?” I hear you say. Which illustrates my point. The internet is not just about the World Wide Web (although talking to marketing people you’d think that), but about a protocol that allows lots of disparate computers to talk to each other.

More Than (Sirius) Black

Has anyone else been wondering what’s happened to David St Hubbins in the last year? I haven’t. I’m almost certain that he’s behind the massive media promotion of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” What do we know about this book. Well, it’s big, the Post Office don;t think they can deliver all of Amazon’s copies in time, and someone dies (which isn’t surprising in a book about good and evil where thousands of wizards have already been murdered). So we actually know nothing about the book. It’s reminiscent of another marketing strategy from a long awaited English

Support Your Local Bookshop

The biggest book of all time (okay, ignoring the Holy Books, all the Religions and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence) goes on sale this weekend. Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix is going to be everywhere, with evry major store and supermarket offering the best price in town. So I’m going to ask you all to do one thing. Please buy Harry Potter 5 from your local independent book shop (if you have one). Ever since the Net Book Agreement (which guaranteed a minimum price on a book) was scrapped, Supermarkets like Tesoc’s and Sainsbury’s have

Eilidh’s Visit to the Health Visitors

Vikki writes… Took Eilidh to be weighed yestderday, four weeks after the last time. I wasn’t expecting much, after gaining 1lb 5oz then, and 1lb 5oz in the three weeks before that, but I was pleasantly surprised! The little gannet has gained 1lb 9oz in the last four weeks! I also asked the health visitor about Eilidh’s eyes as she often squints, so she’s putting in a referral for her with the orthoptist. Who knows when I’ll hear back about that!
